Rafael Soriano is a former major league baseball player. He was signed out of the Dominican Republic and converted into a pitcher by the Mariners organization. Coming up through the minor leagues, he looked like a dominant starting pitcher and was ranked as high as the 6th best pitching prospect in 2003. His rookie cards reached peak demand in 2003.
After a scuffling in the majors, he was converted to a reliever and had an outstanding 2003 season, recording a sub 2.00 ERA and looked like a future All-Star closer. Alas, he blew out his elbow and needed Tommy John surgery in 2004. He would not return to full strength until 2006 and was never quite the same pitcher.
Soriano ended up having one All-Star appearance in 2010 and retired with 207 career saves.
