2001 Fleer Platinum was a baseball card set produced and distributed by Fleer. The set was originally intended to be a celebration of the 20th anniversary of the 1981 Fleer set. Thus insert sets included the Classic Combinations set, linking stars of today with previous generations, Twentieth Anniversary Reprints, reprinting many of the classic rookie cards from the 1980's and the Rack Pack Autographs, buybacks of other Fleer cards and autographed by the player. The set was also intended to only be a single series 300 card set with insert sets. But after the set was so successful, a second series was quickly produced and released later in the year. By releasing very late in the year, many rookies are included that did not have cards in most other sets.
As this set was designed to be a retro-themed set, it was distributed in a number of different types of packs similar to how the cards were packaged in the 1980's. There were three types of hobby packs, standard hobby, jumbo and rack packs each containing slightly different insert sets. There were also retail packs and blaster boxes. It should be noted that short prints from several other 2001 Fleer Products were included in Series 2 packs.
Inserted into second series rack packs at a rate of 1:1, this 27 card set features some of the more feared sluggers in the game, as well as several young hitters poised for a breakout. The cards are unnumbered, but typically organized alphabetically by last name. The Albert Pujols card is notable as one of the game used cards from his rookie year.
National Patch TimeEdit
This 15-card set was inserted into second series jumbo packs at a rate of 1:12 packs. Each card features a prime piece of jersey typically with multiple colors.
Rack Pack AutographsEdit
This 21-card set is one of the real highlights of the group of insert sets in 2001 Fleer Platinum. The cards are buy-backs from other Fleer releases that were hand signed and inserted into Series 1 Rack Packs at a rate of 1 per pack. Most of the cards were serial numbered by hand on the card front.
